Creating a Data Culture at the University of Washington

In 2017, the Office of Institutional Research, at the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT), created the Data Fellows Initiative to build a team-based community of practice distributed throughout campus, thus providing in-unit access to institutional data.  Annually, a new cohort of Fellows come together for three days of intensive “boot camp-style” workshops to examine data governance, FERPA and security issues, and current data and tools. Participants then have the opportunity for hands-on practice analyzing data available to them.  The entire workshop wraps up with team research projects and presentations.  As UWT IR readies for its fourth year of Data Fellows, discover how their program has impacted UWT’s campus, what returns on investment they have seen, and where they hope to improve their program.

As a result of this webinar, participants will:

  • Learn about UW Tacoma’s efforts to establish a data culture
  • Learn how the UW Tacoma’s data fellows program has positively impacted their campus
  • Consider strategies for building capacity and culture
